Three Residents at Helen Purcell Celebrate Special Birthday Milestone

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- There is no specific or magical secret to staying young or living to see a certain age, however, residents from Helen Purcell give a glimpse on what they’ve been able to witness and provide a few keys to life.

Vivian McCall, who just turned 104 on November 28th, talked about her passion for space and said she’s thankful for all the people she has met.

“I was happy that I got to know John Glenn and live in his town, and on his day February 20th, 1962, I think it was 62 that he orbited the earth and I served his special dinner,” McCall said. “I asked his mother about it and we had his special ham loaf dinner with all the trimmings. I also served some of the dignitaries that came from New York to be there that day in the celebration.”

Jerry Dennin, turned 103 on October 5th and gives the community some special keys to staying young. She said her long life span mostly comes from her ancestry and says how her great great grandmother was the first Caucasian child born in Stark County, who lived to be 102.

“In addition, I think the idea and way which the Quakers have their motto is ‘moderation in all things.’ You don’t overdo everything. You just try to keep on even keel and try to be kind and help your neighbors and take care of your family and you don’t overdo your living,” Dennin said.

Another resident, at Helen Purcell, Mike Sompal, also celebrated his 100th birthday last week.
